This cover has an interesting story behind it. I mean, to me at least. Whether or not it is is up to you.
So, on June 8th, around 9:30, Brina Palencia (one of my favorite Voice Actors!) posted her English version of ‘Stones’, used in the dubbed version of the ‘The Rolling Girls’ anime.
I liked the song. A lot. It was catchy; reminded me of a couple songs I really love. So, I decided to cover it.
Once I found the instrumental after about an hour of searching, which is a RIDICULOUS amount of time, in my book— seriously, I was starting to get discouraged!— I could finally get started.
Next up was lyrics. Under normal circumstances, I’d write my own, but given as this was written already, and quite well to boot…
So I set to making a lyric sheet. It was rather difficult, since Ms. Palencia’s character sang and spoke with an accent. Not to mention, another character spoke over part of the song, making the words difficult to make out. I had to piece that bit together by phonetics. ‘You can rest because we take the risk’ is what I made out.
If you know me, then you know I hate having all my eggs in one basket. Similarly, I like having more than one source, for translations, and other things as well. So to confirm, I had some friends help me out, by asking them what they heard.
‘"asdjhakjdssafhdsa we take the risk" - Kouhei Rentaro
“Good intentions let me take the risk” - Daniel Ghun
So I completed the lyric sheet. And to cover all my bases, I posted the document on the video of the English version, and tweeted it to Ms. Palencia.
I got some help from the video link, and Ms. Palencia gave me the correct lyrics.
“We’re adventurers, we take the risk.”
So yeah, that happened.
Skip ahead, I pitch the song to a friend of mine, NewAdventures! Her voice’s quality in ‘Heaven’s Weakness’ reminded me of Ms. Palencia’s, so I thought it’d be a good fit. She agreed, and here we are.
Jump back to June. I have a policy. I don’t cover songs from an anime that I haven’t seen. It’s just something I do, maybe as an excuse to watch more anime. Who knows.
So, Rolling Girls. I’d come into contact with it before, because FUNimation posted a few videos on their YouTube channel about it; the one I watched was called ‘Ramen Battle!’. My friend told me to watch that video in particular, so I did.
...It was exactly as expected.
Moving on, I started watching the show the day after (June 10th), and finished on the night of June 12th.
I was blown away. I came into it, expecting yet another girl-power-moe-fest. And trust me, I’ve had enough of those.
I’m not going to say much, but I’ll say a few things. The plot might seem confusing, since explanations are a bit scarce, but everything makes sense in the end. And it’s actually rather incredible how they managed to tie things up so nicely. Even if the plot twist might seem a little too much to take seriously.
It ended VERY well. I’ll say that too.
Voice acting was all fantastic. Masa probably had my favorite voice though. I also liked how they used different accents to convey different areas in Japan, and it was interesting to see how every region’s stories played out.
My favorite was definitely Kyoto though. :3
‘Stones’ is actually the main theme of the entire series. The lyrics convey the plight of the ‘Rests’, and it’s used a lot throughout the show. From a simple acapella by the girls to bring up their moods, or an acoustic version when times get tough, and even an amazing orchestral mix at the series’ end.
Stones means a lot to them. And it means a lot to me too.
So keep rolling along everybody. I’ll see you all soon.

“A rock concert (complete with Space Dandy on electric guitar and shamisen solo) with cannons poking out of the stage shooting fireworks and lasers, in an attempt to combat multiple flying-Buddha-statue-missiles, while a man leaps off a roof and fire-punches them out of the air.”
- Akane’s first impression of ‘Stones’.
